GOODELL
FAMILY LETTERS- #29 Anson to Parents |
Fort Gaston Dear Parents I suppose you are aware that I am on the sick list again. I tried to do a little too much duty for my strength – in doing business for the Co, at the City – was out in the sun too much and got a little heated. This is the first time this summer I have been so that I could not write. I have usually write for the Capt. what he wanted, sick or well but I have laid all my co. writing aside. I am losing flesh - my hands look like bunches of bones and the boys say A.P. is running down but I can't see it yet and hope I shall not. We have been paid for July & August and I shall try to regain my strength and flesh by living on oysters fresh meats & potatoes. I am happy to say I feel better today than yesterday and hope to continue. The Surgeon (who by the way is Mr. Fish brother of the Rev. Fish of Webster)[1] is giving me whiskey bitters. I suppose it is simply Quinine & Whiskey. The other boys are well. I suppose Edwin is having a good time with you and the rest of the folks. Good bye Anson |
