GOODELL FAMILY LETTERS- #43

Anson to Parents

Brookfield
Oct 1st, 1865

Dear Father & Mother

I suppose you would like to hear from us. I date from our cottage home. We moved last Friday afternoon and find our location one of the pleasantest in Brookfield. Our house commands a view of the river – railway – and large tract of farms on one side the other nearly all the village – and yet is under the hill far enough to be warm – our kitchen has an east – south & west window and is very pleasant indeed – pump a 5 [?] one end – pantry large size – china closet.

Bedroom opens out of the Kitchen and Sitting room and is about 11 square with two windows.

Sitting room has a view of the river & village – has four windows – is 15 Ό by 13 Ό ft –very pleasant. We like better & better every day. For chambers we have one over the kitchen that is about 14 x 16 one over the Sitting room and one over the bedroom.

Cellar – large and nice – four windows for ventilation and is good enough.

Well – 22 feet and has upwards of 2 feet of water init that is very soft.

Ellen endured moving very well – and she and the babe [Edwin Penniman Goodell- born 8/14/65] have got along in the new house without taking cold. She has not milk enough for him now and has to feed him some. He is growing fast – his eyes have settled a dark blue I guess – begins to laugh & notice things considerable. My health is very good. Have not lost a day from Ill health for about three month.

Waldo has decided to remain another year and has now $1200 so we are all pleased very much about it.

How is business? first –best with us.

                                                                                    Good night

                                                                                             Anson
