GOODELL FAMILY LETTERS- #41

Anson to Parents

Brookfield
July 16, 1865

 Dear Father & Mother

It is a pleasant day and now the services are over while Ellen and Addie are getting supplies I have a few leisure moments to devote to you. Enclosed you will find half a dollar to pay for that medicine for which I am very grateful. It is just what I need & have needed for a long time.

Give my respects to Dr. Lindsay and tell him that it is making a new man of me. Since I came home , in fact since a year ago last June there has not a day passed without more or less pain in my bowels; but since taking this it has stopped entirely and I now take a small dose only once in a while whenever I feel a little “out of sorts.”

We are all well and getting along nicely. Ellen is getting along as well as I can wish for which I am very grateful. Addie[1] enjoys herself hugely, goes out to play with the neighbors when Ellen don’t want her and says she should like to live here all the time. Tell Father Robbins she has not been homesick at all.

Edwin was here and spent the Fourth coming Saturday & staying till Wed. noon. We had a real pleasant time. Ned seems really determined that we shall have a home of our own together. It would suit me very much indeed and I don’t know of a place where I should like to live better than Brookfield. We want you to come Father and see if it has not grown very fast since you used to work at West B. And when you come I wish you would bring me the stock (Sole leather) for a pair of boots out soles, innersoles, heels & taps. I shall need a pair this winter and would like to make them myself. I can fox a pair that I have without much expense. The reason why I ask is they won’t sell stock here. I asked the other day & they refused even to sell me a pair of innersoles for slipper bottoms but told me to send by Waldo for them & nothing would be said but I don’t like to take stock for a pair of boots in this way.

My work goes on very well. It has been calf & buff for some time – my last job was 20 cases of calf.[2]

Charlie:

Waldo brought us nice little kitty last week – it is black & white & smart – as sleek very playful. We have lots of fun with it.

Next winter Charlie you must come & see A.P. and stay a long time won’t you?

            All send love

                    Yours,

                                    A.P. & E.A

[1] It appears that Addie is Ellen’s sister who is visiting for the simmer
[2] This refers to the work that Anson does in the shoe shop.
